We offer several different types of training at Five Oaks Retreat based on you and your dog’s lifestyle and needs! We also prioritize your family’s success and satisfaction with your training and therefore continue to offer assistance even after your dog’s stay at the kennel is completed. Below you’ll find the four most popular types of training services we offer. To customize a plan that’s best for you, please fill out the questionnaire at the bottom of this page.

CRATE TRAINING

This is a course that helps a puppy acclimate to a crate. The purpose of this discipline is to ease the housebreaking period, ensure safe travel in vehicles, and give the pup a comfortable place to retreat in the house. During training, the pup is housed in a crate and taken out for potty breaks and play time on a regular schedule.

BASIC OBEDIENCE

This is an in-kennel program for dogs four months and older. The basic skills that are introduced and reinforced include: heel, sit, down, place, here, no, and leave it. All work is practiced “on lead”. The family also meets with the training team at the end of the program to learn the strategies for continuing the training process. Follow-up sessions can then be scheduled.

CANINE GOOD CITIZENSHIP

This program, sanctioned by the American Kennel Association, is designed to encourage responsible dog ownership and good manners in pets and is open to all dogs. Participants who pass the ten-step behavior test are awarded the AKC CGC certification. This can be completed in conjunction with Basic Obedience.

RETRIEVER TRAINING

This course is offered to teach the training standards for a “started dog” according to the United Kennel Club guidelines. Included skills are: yard work, land retrieve, water retrieve, and broke to gunshot. Pups are scheduled for this in-kennel program by the month.
